Ventilações, in a general sense, refers to the process of air exchange within a space. This exchange can occur naturally or be mechanically assisted. Natural ventilation relies on pressure differences and temperature gradients to move air, often through openings like windows and doors. Mechanical ventilation, on the other hand, uses fans and ducted systems to actively control airflow.

The primary purpose of ventilation is to maintain indoor air quality by removing pollutants, controlling humidity, and providing fresh oxygen. In buildings, inadequate ventilation can lead to a buildup of contaminants such as carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and moisture, potentially causing health issues like headaches, fatigue, and respiratory problems.

Different types of ventilation systems exist. Dilution ventilation introduces fresh outdoor air to dilute indoor pollutants. Local exhaust ventilation captures pollutants at their source before they spread. Heat recovery ventilation (HRV) and energy recovery ventilation (ERV) systems pre-condition incoming fresh air using the temperature of the outgoing stale air, thus saving energy.

Ventilation is a critical component of building design and operation, impacting occupant health, comfort, and energy efficiency. Effective ventilation strategies are tailored to specific building types, occupancy levels, and local climate conditions.
