Venerability refers to the quality or state of being venerable, that is, worthy of reverence or respect because of age, wisdom, dignity, or holiness. The noun can describe individuals, institutions, or traditions perceived as deserving respect. Etymologically, venerability comes from Latin venerabilis, meaning to be worthy of reverence.

In religious contexts, venerability has specialized use. In the Catholic Church, “Venerable” is a formal title assigned to a person who has been declared to have lived a life of heroic virtue, following a canonical inquiry. This status is a step in the process toward canonization: Servant of God, Venerable, Blessed, Saint. The designation Venerable does not confirm miracles; beatification and canonization that follow typically require evidence of miracles attributed to the person’s intercession, except in cases of martyrdom. The concept of venerability thus marks a qualitative assessment of character rather than a conclusive judgment of sanctity.

Outside Catholic context, venerability is used more broadly. The term also appears in secular discourse to denote the esteemed age or dignity of persons, offices, or traditions. In Anglican usage, clergy such as archdeacons may be addressed as “Venerable” as a form of courtesy title, while in English translations of Buddhism, “Venerable” is commonly used as an honorific for monks and nuns.

Venerability thus encompasses both a general sense of respected status and, in certain religious traditions, a formal stage in rites of recognition or canonization.
