Velryby, known in English as whales, are large marine mammals belonging to the order Cetacea. They are characterized by their streamlined bodies, enblessed with thick, blubber-rich layers to insulate against cold ocean waters, and their large, often baleen or tooth-filled jaws used for feeding. Whales are divided into two main suborders: Mysticeti (baleen whales) and Odontoceti (toothed whales).

Baleen whales, such as blue whales and humpbacks, possess specialized baleen plates made of keratin that filter small fish andkrill from the water. Toothed whales, including sperm whales and orcas, hunting larger prey like fish and squid using sonar and echolocation capabilities.

Whales are found in oceans worldwide, from the polar regions to the equator, and tend to migrate vast distances annually for breeding and feeding. They are highly social animals, often forming complex groups called pods, which can range from a few individuals to several dozen.

Reproduction involves long gestation periods, typically around 10-18 months, with calves being nursed for several months after birth. Whales communicate through a range of vocalizations and songs, which can travel great distances underwater.

Throughout history, many whale populations have been severely impacted by commercial whaling, leading to the decline of several species. Conservation efforts, such as international whaling bans and protective measures, have contributed to the recovery of some populations. Nevertheless, whales continue to face threats from entanglement in fishing gear, climate change, and habitat degradation.

Whales are considered important indicators of ocean health and are protected under various international laws and agreements aimed at ensuring their survival for future generations.
