It comprises the soft palate (velum), the pharyngeal walls (particularly the posterior and lateral pharyngeal walls), and the muscles of the tongue and larynx that interact with these structures.

The primary function of the velopharyngeal area is to regulate the communication between the oral cavity and the nasal cavity. During the production of most speech sounds, such as vowels and oral consonants, the soft palate elevates and moves backward to make contact with the posterior pharyngeal wall, effectively closing off the nasal passage. This closure prevents air from escaping through the nose, directing it instead through the mouth for oral sound production. This process is essential for achieving the correct articulation and acoustic properties of spoken language.

Conversely, during the production of nasal consonants like 'm' and 'n', the soft palate lowers, allowing air to pass freely through the nasal cavity. The coordinated action of the muscles within the velopharyngeal area is dynamic and precise, adapting rapidly to produce different speech sounds. This intricate mechanism also plays a vital role in swallowing, preventing food and liquids from entering the nasal cavity by sealing off the nasopharynx. Dysfunction of the velopharyngeal area can lead to velopharyngeal insufficiency, resulting in hypernasality (excessive resonance in the nose) and difficulties with speech articulation.
