Solid polymer electrolytes offer good mechanical stability and can prevent dendrite formation, while liquid electrolytes provide high ionic conductivity.

The combination typically involves a polymer host, such as polyethylene oxide (PEO) or polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), which swells and dissolves the liquid electrolyte. The liquid electrolyte usually consists of a salt, like lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) or lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI), dissolved in organic solvents such as ethylene carbonate (EC) or dimethyl carbonate (DMC). The polymer acts as a stationary phase, immobilizing the liquid components and facilitating ion transport through segmental motion of the polymer chains and ion hopping.

Vedelpolümeerelektrolüüdiks find applications in electrochemical devices, most notably in lithium-ion batteries. They are explored as a safer alternative to conventional liquid electrolytes, as the polymer matrix reduces flammability and volatility. Their use can also lead to improved battery performance, including enhanced cycle life and rate capability, by suppressing dendrite growth and providing better interfacial contact with electrodes.
