Vastefunktio is a concept used in physics, engineering, and related fields to describe how a system responds to an external stimulus. In the context of linear time-invariant systems, the output signal is determined by the impulse response, which captures the system’s reaction to a unit impulse. The same idea can be expressed in discrete time.

Mathematically, the continuous-time relationship is y(t) = ∫ h(τ) x(t−τ) dτ, where h(t) is the impulse response and x(t) is the input. In discrete time, y[n] = ∑ h[k] x[n−k]. The impulse response thus fully characterizes a linear time-invariant system. In the frequency domain, the Fourier transform H(ω) of h(t) or the Laplace transform H(s) provides the transfer or frequency response, describing how different frequency components are attenuated and phase-shifted by the system.

Key properties include causality, which implies h(t) = 0 for t < 0 in many physical systems, and stability, which requires that a bounded input yields a bounded output. For nonlinear or non–time-invariant systems, the term response function may still be used, but the simple convolution form no longer holds.

Applications are wide-ranging. In signal processing, the response function informs filter design and signal reconstruction. In control theory, it helps predict system behavior and inform controller design. In physics and materials science, response functions such as susceptibility or permeability describe how a system responds to external fields, and Green’s functions provide related impulse responses for differential equations. The concept is central to analyzing and predicting dynamic behavior across disciplines.
