Vasta-ainesynteesi is a Finnish term that translates to antibody synthesis or antibody production. It refers to the biological process by which the immune system creates antibodies. Antibodies, also known as immunoglobulins, are Y-shaped proteins produced by specialized white blood cells called B lymphocytes (B cells). Their primary function is to identify and neutralize foreign substances called antigens, such as bacteria, viruses, and allergens.

The process of vasta-ainesynteesi begins when a B cell encounters an antigen that matches its specific B cell receptor. This encounter, often with the help of helper T cells, activates the B cell.
