These layers are primarily defined by their temperature gradients, which are the rates at which temperature changes with altitude. The atmosphere is divided into several varmenivåer, each with unique properties and behaviors.

The troposphere is the lowest layer of the atmosphere, extending from the Earth's surface up to about 10-15 kilometers. It is characterized by a decrease in temperature with increasing altitude, known as the lapse rate. This layer is where most weather phenomena occur, including clouds, rain, and storms.

Above the troposphere lies the stratosphere, which extends up to about 50 kilometers. In this layer, temperature increases with altitude due to the absorption of ultraviolet radiation by ozone. The stratopause marks the boundary between the stratosphere and the mesosphere, where temperatures again begin to decrease.

Above the mesosphere is the thermosphere, which extends up to about 600 kilometers. In this layer, temperature increases with altitude due to the absorption of solar radiation. The thermopause marks the boundary between the thermosphere and the exosphere.

The exosphere is the outermost layer of the atmosphere, extending from the thermopause to the edge of space. It is characterized by very low densities and high temperatures, with molecules moving at high velocities.
