Varjutusperioodi, also known as the period of concealment, refers to a historical and theological concept within Shia Islam, specifically the Twelver branch. It describes the time when the twelfth Imam, Muhammad al-Mahdi, is believed to have entered occultation. According to Twelver Shia belief, Imam Mahdi was born in 869 CE and is the prophesied redeemer who will bring justice to the world.

The varjutusperioodi is divided into two stages: the Minor Occultation (al-Ghaybah al-Sughra) and the Major Occultation (al-Ghaybah al-Kubra). The Minor Occultation began in 874 CE and lasted until 941 CE. During this period, Imam Mahdi communicated with his followers through intermediaries known as the Four Deputies. These deputies acted as representatives, relaying the Imam's guidance and addressing the community's needs.

The Major Occultation commenced in 941 CE and is believed to be ongoing. In this phase, direct communication with the Imam ceased, and he is considered to be in hiding from humanity. Twelver Shia theology posits that during this time, the Imam continues to guide the world spiritually and will eventually reappear to establish his reign of justice. The concept of the varjutusperioodi is central to Shia eschatology and influences their understanding of leadership, divine guidance, and the ultimate future of humanity.
