Valutavdrag is a Swedish term used in accounting and taxation to describe an adjustment related to foreign currency (valuta). The word is formed from valuta (currency) and avdrag (deduction or offset). The precise meaning and application vary by context, but the core idea is to offset or adjust values that arise from exchange-rate movements.

In practice, valutavdrag can occur when a company or individual records foreign-currency transactions. Upon invoicing, the amount in foreign currency is translated to Swedish kronor at an agreed rate. If the exchange rate changes before payment or settlement, the resulting exchange-rate difference is typically recorded as a forex gain or loss. In some contexts this difference is treated as a deductible or taxable item for tax purposes, depending on national tax rules.

The concept is closely related to terms such as valutakurs (exchange rate), valutakursdifferens (foreign-exchange difference), and valutaklausul (currency clause) used in contracts to mitigate currency risk. Valutavdrag should not be confused with ROT- or RUT-avdrag, which are deductions under specific home-service schemes.

Because tax and accounting rules differ and may change, practitioners typically refer to official guidance from the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) and international accounting standards (IFRS/IAS) for exact treatment. An example is a company purchasing equipment priced in USD; if the SEK value changes from invoice to payment date, the resulting forex difference may be recognized as a valutavdrag in the accounts, subject to applicable rules.
