There are several main categories of white blood cells, each with specialized functions.

The primary types of white blood cells include lymphocytes, monocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils. Lymphocytes are further divided into B cells, T cells, and natural killer (NK) cells. B cells produce antibodies, which are proteins that target and neutralize specific pathogens. T cells play various roles, including directly killing infected cells and regulating the immune response. Monocytes are the largest type of white blood cell and can differentiate into macrophages. Macrophages are phagocytic cells, meaning they engulf and digest cellular debris, foreign substances, microbes, cancer cells, and anything else that does not have the type of proteins specific to healthy body cells on its surface. Neutrophils are the most abundant type of white blood cell and are the first responders to bacterial infections. They engulf and destroy bacteria through a process called phagocytosis.

Eosinophils are involved in fighting parasitic infections and play a role in allergic reactions. Basophils are the least common type of white blood cell and release histamine and other mediators during allergic reactions and inflammation. The production and circulation of these various white blood cells are tightly regulated to maintain immune system balance and effectively respond to threats.
