Valensekvarkarna, often translated as valence quarks, are the quarks within a hadron that determine its quantum numbers, such as electric charge, spin, and baryon number. Hadrons, like protons and neutrons, are composite particles made up of quarks and are bound together by the strong nuclear force mediated by gluons. While a hadron's total quark content can include a "sea" of virtual quark-antiquark pairs that constantly pop in and out of existence, the valence quarks are the fundamental constituents that define the hadron's identity.
For example, a proton is composed of two up valence quarks and one down valence quark. Their
