Vaihto-optiot, also known as exchange options or simply options, are financial contracts that give the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell an underlying asset at a specified price on or before a certain date. The underlying asset can be a stock, bond, commodity, currency, or any other financial instrument. The specified price is called the strike price, and the certain date is known as the expiration date.

There are two main types of options: call options and put options. A call option gives the holder the right to buy the underlying asset, while a put option gives the holder the right to sell it. Buyers of options pay a premium to the seller for this right. If the option is not exercised by the expiration date, it expires worthless, and the buyer loses the premium paid.

Options can be used for various purposes, including speculation, hedging, and income generation. Speculators might buy call options if they expect the price of the underlying asset to rise, or put options if they anticipate a price decline. Hedgers use options to protect against potential losses in their existing portfolios. For instance, an investor holding a stock might buy put options to limit their downside risk. Option sellers, who receive the premium, aim to profit from the time value decay of the option or by the option expiring out-of-the-money. The value of an option is influenced by factors such as the underlying asset's price, the strike price, the time to expiration, volatility of the underlying asset, and prevailing interest rates.
