Vaiheenkäytön refers to the Finnish term for phase transition in physics and chemistry. It describes the physical process where a substance changes from one state to another. Common examples include melting, freezing, boiling, condensation, sublimation, and deposition.

A phase transition occurs when the thermodynamic conditions, such as temperature and pressure, change sufficiently to alter the stability of a particular phase. For instance, when ice (solid water) is heated to its melting point, it absorbs energy and transforms into liquid water. This energy absorbed or released during a phase transition at constant temperature is known as latent heat.

The study of phase transitions is crucial in understanding the behavior of matter. Different phases have distinct properties due to the arrangement and motion of their constituent particles. For example, in a solid, particles are tightly packed and vibrate in fixed positions, while in a gas, they are far apart and move randomly at high speeds.

Phase transitions can be classified by their order, with first-order transitions involving a discontinuity in the first derivative of the Gibbs free energy (like latent heat), and second-order transitions involving a discontinuity in the second derivative (like specific heat). Understanding these transitions helps in various applications, from material science and engineering to meteorology and astrophysics.
