Vércsoportnál is a Hungarian term that translates to "blood group" in English. It refers to the classification of blood based on the presence or absence of inherited antigenic substances on the surface of red blood cells. The most well-known blood group systems are the ABO system and the Rh system.

In the ABO system, blood is classified into four main types: A, B, AB, and O. This classification depends on the presence or absence of A and B antigens on the red blood cells and the corresponding antibodies in the plasma. Type A blood has A antigens and anti-B antibodies. Type B blood has B antigens and anti-A antibodies. Type AB blood has both A and B antigens and no antibodies. Type O blood has neither A nor B antigens but has both anti-A and anti-B antibodies.

The Rh system, primarily determined by the RhD antigen, classifies blood as Rh-positive (RhD present) or Rh-negative (RhD absent). The combination of ABO and Rh systems creates a more detailed blood group, such as A positive, O negative, etc.

Understanding blood groups is crucial for safe blood transfusions, as transfusing incompatible blood can lead to a severe immune reaction. It is also important in pregnancy, particularly regarding Rh incompatibility between mother and fetus, which can cause hemolytic disease of the newborn. Blood typing is a routine medical procedure performed before surgeries, during prenatal care, and for blood donations.
