These stages are characterized by specific cognitive, emotional, and social competencies that individuals are expected to acquire before progressing to the next level. While the exact number and nature of these stages vary across different theorists, the underlying principle remains the same: development is a cumulative process.

Prominent examples include Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development, which outlines four stages from infancy to adolescence: sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational. Each stage is marked by a unique way of understanding the world. Another influential theory is Erik Erikson's psychosocial stages, which describe eight universal stages of development across the lifespan, each presenting a psychosocial crisis that must be resolved.

These theories have been instrumental in understanding child development and have informed educational practices and psychological interventions. However, they have also faced criticism for their rigidity and for potentially overlooking the influence of culture, individual differences, and environmental factors on developmental trajectories.
