utele

Utele is a constructed language (conlang) created for world-building and fictional media. It is designed to be easy to learn, with regular grammar and phonology, and to function as a common language within a fictional continent.

Origin and development: Utele emerged within online conlang communities in the early 2010s as part of the Nyathra world-building project. Its grammar and vocabulary were progressively standardized through community contributions and published reference grammars.

Phonology: Utele has five vowel phonemes (a, e, i, o, u) and about fourteen consonants (p, b, t, d, k, g, m, n, l, r, s, h, w, j). It is non-tonal; syllable structure is CV or CVC. Stress generally falls on the penultimate syllable.

Grammar: Utele is analytic to moderately synthetic with a basic SVO word order. It uses agglutinative morphology; verbs take affixes for tense and aspect, nouns take number suffixes, and adjectives follow nouns.

Writing system: Officially the Latin script is used, with optional diacritics to indicate vowel quality and stress. A small set of digraphs represents common sounds.

Usage and reception: In fiction, Utele appears as a lingua franca among diverse city-states. It has a dedicated learner community and published resources including a grammar, dictionaries, and example texts.
