Utbudsöverskott, also known as a surplus of supply, occurs in a market when the quantity of a good or service that producers are willing and able to sell at a given price exceeds the quantity that consumers are willing and able to buy at that same price. This situation typically arises when the market price is set above the equilibrium price.

At a price above equilibrium, the higher price incentivizes producers to supply more, as it becomes more profitable to produce. Simultaneously, the higher price discourages consumers from purchasing as much, leading to a decrease in demand. The gap between the quantity supplied and the quantity demanded at this elevated price constitutes the utbudsöverskott.

When an utbudsöverskott exists, sellers will find themselves with unsold inventory. To clear this inventory and avoid losses, sellers are generally compelled to lower their prices. As prices fall, the quantity supplied will decrease, and the quantity demanded will increase. This process continues until the market price reaches the equilibrium level, where the quantity supplied equals the quantity demanded, and the utbudsöverskott is eliminated. Conversely, a shortage occurs when demand exceeds supply.
