urodilatin

Urodilatin is a natriuretic peptide hormone produced in the renal tubules of the kidney. It is a 32-amino acid peptide and is a member of the natriuretic peptide family, which also includes atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP). Urodilatin plays a significant role in regulating blood pressure and fluid balance.

The primary function of urodilatin is to promote natriuresis and diuresis, meaning it increases the excretion of sodium and water by the kidneys. It achieves this by acting on specific receptors in the renal tubules, leading to vasodilation of the renal blood vessels and inhibition of sodium reabsorption. This results in a decrease in blood volume and blood pressure.

Urodilatin is synthesized from a precursor molecule called prepro-urodilatin. It is released from the distal tubules and collecting ducts of the kidney in response to increased renal blood flow and sodium delivery. Unlike ANP and BNP, which are primarily released from the heart, urodilatin's production is localized to the kidney.

Research has suggested that urodilatin may have protective effects on the kidneys, particularly in conditions of kidney disease.
