Urinecollectie is the process of gathering a sample of urine from an individual for various purposes. These purposes can include medical diagnosis, drug testing, pregnancy testing, or monitoring kidney function. The most common method involves a person urinating directly into a sterile container provided by a healthcare professional or testing facility.

For diagnostic purposes, a midstream clean-catch sample is often preferred. This method aims to minimize contamination from bacteria or other substances on the skin or in the genital area. The individual first cleans the external genital area, then begins to urinate into the toilet, collects the middle portion of the urine stream in the container, and finishes urinating into the toilet. This helps ensure the urine sample is representative of what is being produced by the kidneys.

In some cases, particularly for infants or individuals unable to provide a sample voluntarily, a urine collection bag may be used. This adhesive bag is attached to the perineal area to collect urine as it is voided. Suprapubic aspiration, a more invasive method, involves inserting a needle through the abdominal wall directly into the bladder to collect urine. This is typically reserved for specific medical situations.

Once collected, urine samples are usually analyzed in a laboratory. The results can provide valuable information about a person's health status, detecting conditions such as urinary tract infections, kidney disease, diabetes, and the presence of illicit substances.
