Upregulating, or upregulation, is a biological process in which a cell increases the quantity or functional responsiveness of a molecule, such as a receptor or a protein, in response to a stimulus. It is part of cellular regulation and is often described in contrast to downregulation, where expression or responsiveness decreases.

In receptor biology, upregulation refers to an increased number or density of receptors on a cell surface. This can occur after prolonged exposure to an antagonist or low levels of ligand, which reduces receptor occupancy and triggers compensatory synthesis.
