Uniformization theory refers to a set of results in complex analysis and the theory of Riemann surfaces that represent complex spaces as quotients of simpler, well-understood domains by group actions. The central result is the uniformization theorem.

The Uniformization Theorem states that every simply connected Riemann surface is conformally equivalent to one of three canonical models: the Riemann sphere, the complex plane, or the unit disk. These models correspond to constant curvature +1, 0, and −1, respectively. As a consequence, more general Riemann surfaces can be realized as quotient spaces of one of these simply connected models by a discrete group of biholomorphisms, acting freely and properly discontinuously.

In practical terms, if X is a Riemann surface, there exists a simply connected cover tilde X and a discrete group Γ of automorphisms such that X ≅ tilde X / Γ. If X has genus greater than one, tilde X is the unit disk and X carries a natural hyperbolic structure; for the sphere or the plane, the corresponding quotient structures are spherical or Euclidean.

Historically, early forms of uniformization were developed by Poincaré and Koebe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Ahlfors and Bers provided influential analytic proofs in the 1960s, and subsequent work has integrated hyperbolic geometry and Teichmüller theory. Uniformization has become central to the classification and study of Riemann surfaces, enabling the use of Fuchsian and Kleinian groups to understand moduli spaces, geometric structures, and the interplay between topology, geometry, and complex analysis.
