Unhitching refers to the process of disconnecting a vehicle, trailer, or other attached load from its towing mechanism. This procedure is essential for safely separating a trailer from a towing vehicle, such as a truck, SUV, or car, to prevent damage or accidents. The exact steps involved depend on the type of hitch and coupling system used, but the general principles remain consistent across most setups.

Before unhitching, it is important to ensure the trailer is stable and secure. This includes engaging the trailer’s parking brake, securing cargo to prevent shifting, and, if applicable, releasing any locking mechanisms on the coupling.
