understem

Understem is a label used in some botanical and horticultural texts to denote the portion of a plant stem located below a defined reference point on the stem, such as a graft union, node, or crown. The term is not universally standardized and its precise meaning can vary by context.

In grafting and propagation, understem is often used to refer to the part of the rootstock stem that lies beneath the graft union. Its condition and growth can influence the vigor of the grafted plant, resistance to disease, and nutrient transport. In architectural studies of plant form, understem contrasts with the overstem—the section above the reference point that bears leaves and secondary growth.

Outside botany, "understem" has occasionally appeared in linguistic or computational discussions as a nonstandard term for the underlying or base form of a word or data element beneath a higher-level structure. These usages are informal and not part of established terminology.
