Undershipments are shipments in which the quantity delivered is less than the quantity specified in an order. They can occur in manufacturing, wholesale, or retail logistics and may involve partial shipments or missing items. They are distinct from over-shipments, which deliver more than ordered.

Common causes include stockouts, production delays, supplier capacity limits, quality issues, picking or packing errors, and miscommunication of quantities or delivery dates. External disruptions such as transportation delays or customs holds can also contribute.

Undershipments can delay production, create backorders, and reduce customer satisfaction. They can increase costs due to expedited reshipments, penalties under service-level agreements, and inventory reconciliation challenges.

The undershipment rate equals the undelivered quantity divided by the ordered quantity, measured at order, line item, or supplier level. Tracking by product, customer, and region helps identify recurring issues and supports planning decisions.

Prevention strategies include improved forecasting, maintaining safety stock, stronger supplier collaboration, and better supply-chain visibility. Operational remedies include staged shipments, proactive backorder communication, and efficient reshipment or substitution processes.
