Underenhedsafhængigt is a Danish term that translates to "subunit-dependent" in English. It is most commonly used in the context of molecular biology, particularly when discussing proteins. A protein is considered subunit-dependent if its function or proper structure requires the presence and interaction of multiple individual protein subunits. These subunits assemble into a larger, functional complex. If one or more of these subunits are absent or do not assemble correctly, the protein will not be functional or will exhibit altered properties.

This concept is fundamental to understanding the behavior of many biological macromolecules. For example, hemoglobin, the protein responsible for oxygen transport in the blood, is a tetramer, meaning it is composed of four subunits (two alpha and two beta globin chains). Its ability to bind and release oxygen efficiently is entirely dependent on the correct assembly and interaction of these four subunits. Similarly, many enzymes, ion channels, and structural proteins in cells operate as multimeric complexes, where the overall function is a direct consequence of the cooperation between their constituent subunits.
