Umpisäiliö refers to a sealed container or tank, commonly used in various contexts to prevent leakage or escape of its contents. In domestic settings, the term is often associated with septic systems, where an umpisäiliö serves as a primary treatment unit for wastewater. This type of tank collects raw sewage from a household and allows for the initial separation of solids and liquids. Over time, solid waste settles to the bottom, forming sludge, while lighter materials float to the surface as scum. Bacteria within the tank help to break down some of the organic matter. Effluent, the partially treated liquid, may then be discharged to a secondary treatment system, such as a leach field, or in some cases, the umpisäiliö may be designed for periodic emptying by a vacuum truck.
