Ultramafic is a term used in geology and petrology to describe a type of igneous rock that is composed of dark-colored minerals, primarily of peridotitic and pyroxenitic composition. Ultramafic rocks are often found in ophiolites, which are sequences of rocks that have formed at mid-ocean ridges and have been subsequently thrust onto continental crust. These rocks can provide important information about the tectonic and magmatic history of the Earth's mantle and upper crust.
