Uåndingen is the Danish word for exhalation, the process of breathing out. It is the final phase of the respiratory cycle, where air is expelled from the lungs. This occurs when the diaphragm, a large dome-shaped muscle at the base of the chest cavity, relaxes and moves upward. Simultaneously, the intercostal muscles, which are located between the ribs, also relax, causing the rib cage to move downward and inward. These actions decrease the volume of the thoracic cavity, which in turn increases the pressure within the lungs, forcing air out.

The air exhaled from the lungs is rich in carbon dioxide, a waste product of cellular respiration, and also contains water vapor. The rate and depth of exhalation can vary depending on physiological needs and voluntary control. For instance, during periods of rest, exhalation is typically a passive process. However, during physical exertion or when speaking, exhalation becomes more active and forceful, involving greater muscle contraction. Certain breathing exercises and meditative practices focus on controlling and prolonging exhalation, which can have physiological effects such as slowing the heart rate and promoting relaxation. In medical contexts, the pattern and characteristics of exhalation can provide clues about respiratory health.
