The luteal phase is characterized by several physiological changes. If pregnancy occurs, the corpus luteum continues to produce progesterone, supported by hormones from the developing embryo, to maintain the pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur, the decrease in progesterone and estrogen triggers the shedding of the endometrium, resulting in menstrual bleeding.

The length of the luteal phase is typically consistent for an individual, usually ranging from 12 to 16 days. A luteal phase shorter than 10 days may indicate a luteal phase defect, which can contribute to infertility or recurrent miscarriages.
