Törmäysreaktio refers to a chemical reaction that occurs when reactant particles collide with sufficient energy and in the correct orientation. This concept is central to chemical kinetics and helps explain the rate at which reactions proceed.

For a reaction to occur, the colliding particles, such as atoms or molecules, must possess a minimum amount of kinetic energy, known as the activation energy. If the collision energy is less than the activation energy, the particles will simply rebound without reacting. Furthermore, the orientation of the colliding particles is crucial. If they collide in a way that does not allow for the breaking and forming of necessary chemical bonds, no reaction will take place, even if the energy is sufficient.

The frequency of collisions and the fraction of those collisions that are effective (i.e., possess enough energy and the correct orientation) determine the rate of the reaction. Factors such as temperature, concentration, and surface area can influence the frequency and effectiveness of these collisions. Increasing temperature, for instance, increases the kinetic energy of particles, leading to more frequent and more energetic collisions, thereby increasing the reaction rate. Similarly, higher concentrations mean more particles in a given volume, resulting in more frequent collisions.
