Tåreveiene, also known as the lacrimal apparatus, are a system of structures within the eye that produce, distribute, and drain tears. This continuous process is essential for maintaining the health and clarity of the ocular surface.

The production of tears originates from the lacrimal gland, a small almond-shaped gland located in the upper outer portion of the eye socket. This gland secretes a watery fluid that lubricates the eye, washes away debris, and contains antibodies that protect against infection. Tears are also produced by smaller accessory glands in the eyelids.

Once produced, tears spread across the surface of the eye with each blink. This creates a thin tear film that consists of three layers: an oily outer layer, a watery middle layer, and a mucus inner layer. This film keeps the cornea moist, smooths out irregularities on the corneal surface for clear vision, and nourishes the cornea.

The drainage of tears begins at the inner corner of the eye, where two small openings called puncta are located. Tears collect in these puncta and flow into tiny tubes called canaliculi. These canaliculi lead to a small sac called the lacrimal sac, which is situated in a groove on the side of the nose.

From the lacrimal sac, tears travel down a duct called the nasolacrimal duct. This duct empties into the nasal cavity. This is why crying often results in a runny nose, as the excess tears drain into the nose. The entire system works in a delicate balance to ensure the eye remains healthy and comfortable.
