Täpläalue, also known as the macula, is a small, specialized area in the retina of the eye responsible for sharp, central vision. It is located at the back of the eye, slightly to the side of the optic nerve. The macula is densely packed with cone photoreceptor cells, which are crucial for color vision and detecting fine details. This high concentration of cones allows us to see clearly and perceive colors accurately, enabling tasks such as reading, driving, and recognizing faces.

The central part of the macula is called the fovea. The fovea is an even more specialized region, containing only cone cells and lacking blood vessels, which further enhances visual acuity. This is the point of sharpest vision, where our eyes are directed when we focus on an object.

Conditions affecting the macula can significantly impair vision. Macular degeneration is a common age-related condition that damages the macula, leading to a loss of central vision. Other macular disorders can include macular holes, epiretinal membranes, and macular edema, all of which can impact the ability to see clearly and can vary in their severity and progression. Regular eye examinations are important for detecting and managing any potential issues with the macula.
