Since the speed of light is constant and known, the time-of-flight can be directly converted into a distance. These are very common in hunting, golfing, and construction due to their accuracy and ease of use.

Other methods include ultrasonic rangefinders, which use sound waves, and radar rangefinders, which employ radio waves. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages regarding range, accuracy, environmental conditions, and cost.
