A thrust ball bearing is a type of rolling-element bearing that is designed to handle axial loads. Unlike radial ball bearings, which are primarily designed to support loads perpendicular to the shaft, thrust ball bearings are specifically engineered to manage forces that are parallel to the shaft's axis of rotation.

These bearings consist of three main components: a shaft washer, a housing washer, and a set of balls. The balls are retained within a cage, which keeps them evenly spaced. The shaft washer is mounted on the rotating shaft, while the housing washer is typically stationary and is often seated in a housing bore. When an axial load is applied, it is transferred through the balls from the shaft washer to the housing washer.

Thrust ball bearings are available in various designs, including single-direction and double-direction types. Single-direction thrust ball bearings can only accommodate axial loads in one direction. Double-direction thrust ball bearings can handle axial loads from both directions, as they have two rows of balls and a double-grooved shaft washer.

Due to their design, thrust ball bearings have limited radial load capacity. They are commonly used in applications where the primary load is axial, such as in rotating tables, screw jacks, and some types of pumps and compressors. Proper lubrication is essential for the smooth operation and longevity of thrust ball bearings.
