Tvílitningspar refers to a pair of stars that appear close together when viewed from Earth. This close apparent proximity can be due to two reasons: the stars are actually orbiting each other at a relatively close distance, forming a binary star system, or they are simply in the same line of sight from our perspective, but are vastly different distances from Earth, forming an optical double.

Astronomers distinguish between these two types through observation. Spectroscopic analysis or observing the stars' motion over time can reveal if they are gravitationally bound and orbiting each other. If no such orbital motion or gravitational influence is detected, the pair is considered an optical double. True binary stars are significant in astrophysics as they allow for the determination of stellar masses, which is difficult to measure for single stars. Studying binary systems also provides insights into stellar evolution and the formation of planetary systems. Optical doubles, while visually interesting, do not hold the same scientific importance as true binary stars.
