Turvallisuusluokituksia, known in English as security classifications or security clearances, are a system used by governments and organizations to control access to sensitive information and positions. These classifications are assigned based on the level of potential damage that could result from unauthorized disclosure of information or from an individual being compromised.

The classification levels typically range from unclassified to top secret. For example, in many Western countries, common levels include Confidential, Secret, and Top Secret. Each level is associated with a specific degree of harm if the information were to be accessed by an unauthorized party. Confidential information, if disclosed, could cause some damage to national security. Secret information, if disclosed, could cause serious damage. Top Secret information, if disclosed, could cause exceptionally grave damage.

Obtaining a security clearance usually involves a thorough background investigation of the individual. This investigation typically includes checks on their past employment, financial history, criminal record, and sometimes even their personal relationships and foreign contacts. The purpose is to assess the individual's reliability, trustworthiness, and potential vulnerability to coercion or manipulation.

Security classifications are not just about information; they also apply to personnel and facilities. Personnel are granted clearances to access specific levels of information or to work in certain sensitive positions. Facilities may be designated as secure areas that require specific clearances for entry.
