Tuotantosuhteita, a Finnish term, translates to "production relations" in English and is a core concept in Marxist theory. It refers to the social relationships that people enter into as they produce the means of life. These relations are not primarily about interpersonal feelings or friendships, but rather about the structure of society and how it is organized around the production and distribution of goods and services. In essence, tuotantosuhteita describe who owns the means of production (land, factories, tools, etc.) and who does not. This ownership structure dictates the power dynamics and the division of labor within a society.

Marx distinguished between different historical modes of production, each characterized by its own unique tuotantosuhteita. For example, in feudalism, the relationship was between landowners (lords) and serfs who worked the land. In capitalism, the primary relationship is between the bourgeoisie, who own the means of production, and the proletariat, who must sell their labor power to survive. These relations are seen as fundamentally exploitative by Marxists, as the bourgeoisie extract surplus value from the labor of the proletariat. Changes in tuotantosuhteita are considered the driving force behind historical change and social revolution. The way a society organizes its production profoundly shapes its social, political, and economic structures.
