Tuominen is a Finnish legal term referring to the act by which a court reaches a verdict and, if applicable, imposes a sentence on a person accused of a crime. It is part of the legal process (oikeudenkäynti) and encompasses both the determination of guilt (verdict) and the application of punishment (sentence). The end result is a tuomio, a formal decision that may convict or acquit the defendant.

In criminal cases, prosecutors bring charges and present evidence, while the defense argues on behalf of the accused. After the trial, the judge or a panel issues the decision: a guilty verdict or an acquittal. If convicted, the court imposes a sanction such as imprisonment, fines, community service, or probation, in accordance with the law and the circumstances. The convicted person has the right to appeal to a higher court, typically the Court of Appeal (hovioikeus) and, in certain matters, the Supreme Court (korkein oikeus).

Tuominen also occurs in civil matters, where a court issues a judgment that settles disputes—for example orders to pay damages or to fulfill contractual obligations. The administrative judiciary provides comparable judgments in administrative cases. Outside the formal justice system, the term tuominen can also be used metaphorically to describe moral or social condemnation.

Etymologically, tuominen derives from the verb tuomita, meaning to judge or to condemn, with tuomio or tuomio as the related noun forms meaning verdict or sentence.
