The respiratory system begins with the nose, which filters and warms incoming air and also plays a role in olfaction. The lungs are the primary sites of gas exchange. They are divided into two main lobes and are responsible for taking in oxygen from the inhaled air and expelling carbon dioxide. The alveoli are tiny air sacs where the exchange of gases occurs. The diaphragm, a dome-shaped muscle located below the lungs, plays a crucial role in breathing by contracting and expanding the chest cavity, facilitating the inhalation and exhalation of air.

The respiratory system is controlled by the brainstem, which sends signals to the muscles involved in breathing. The autonomic nervous system also plays a role in regulating breathing, particularly in response to changes in blood gas levels and pH.

Diseases and conditions affecting the respiratory system can range from common colds and flu to more serious conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer. Proper respiratory health is essential for overall well-being and quality of life.
