Cyclopropane is a cycloalkane with the molecular formula C3H6. It consists of three carbon atoms connected in a ring, with each carbon atom bonded to two hydrogen atoms. This strain arises from the deviation of the C-C-C bond angles from the ideal tetrahedral angle of approximately 109.5 degrees; in cyclopropane, these angles are forced to be 60 degrees.

Due to this inherent strain, cyclopropane is more reactive than larger cycloalkanes or open-chain alkanes. The carbon-carbon bonds in cyclopropane are weaker than normal C-C single bonds, often described as having "bent bonds" or "banana bonds" due to the overlap of atomic orbitals being less efficient than in unstrained systems. Historically, cyclopropane found use as a general anesthetic. Its anesthetic properties were discovered in the early 20th century. However, its use has largely been superseded by safer and more controllable anesthetic agents due to its flammability and potential for cardiac arrhythmias.
