True RMS mätning, or true root mean square measurement, is a method used to determine the effective value of a varying electrical voltage or current. Unlike simple average or peak detection methods, true RMS measurement accurately reflects the power that a waveform would deliver to a resistive load. This is particularly important for non-sinusoidal waveforms, such as those found in switching power supplies, motor drives, or audio signals.

The root mean square value is mathematically derived by squaring the instantaneous values of the waveform, averaging these squared values over a specific period, and then taking the square root of that average. This process effectively accounts for both positive and negative excursions of the waveform and its amplitude variations, providing a single, representative value.

Standard multimeters often use averaging methods which can lead to significant errors when measuring non-sinusoidal signals. A true RMS multimeter, however, contains circuitry specifically designed to perform the RMS calculation, ensuring accurate readings regardless of the waveform's shape.
