Tropomysin is a protein found in muscle cells. It plays a crucial role in muscle contraction by regulating the interaction between actin and myosin. Tropomyosin is a long, fibrous molecule that lies along the groove of the actin filament. In a relaxed muscle, tropomyosin covers the sites on actin where myosin can bind.

This covering prevents myosin from attaching to actin, thus keeping the muscle in a relaxed state. When a muscle receives a signal to contract, a series of events causes tropomyosin to shift its position. This shift exposes the binding sites on actin. Once exposed, myosin heads can bind to actin, forming cross-bridges. The subsequent pulling action of these cross-bridges causes the actin filaments to slide past the myosin filaments, resulting in muscle shortening and contraction.

Tropomyosin's regulatory function is further controlled by other proteins, notably troponin. Troponin acts as a calcium sensor. When calcium ions bind to troponin, it causes a conformational change that, in turn, moves tropomyosin away from the actin binding sites. This intricate interplay between actin, myosin, tropomyosin, and troponin is fundamental to the process of muscle movement.
