The term was first introduced by ecologist Robert Paine in the 1960s, who observed how the removal of a keystone species, such as the sea star *Pisaster ochraceus*, led to significant changes in the structure of intertidal communities. In a trophic cascade, the removal or introduction of a predator can influence the abundance and behavior of its prey, which in turn affects the species that prey upon those organisms, and so on down the food chain.

Trophic cascades can occur in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
