The brass family, on the other hand, is characterized by the player buzzing their lips into a mouthpiece. This vibration sets the air column inside the instrument in motion. Common brass instruments include the trumpet, trombone, French horn, and tuba. While historically made of brass, some modern brass instruments may be constructed from other metals. The pitch is altered by changing the lip tension and by using valves or a slide to change the length of the tubing.
