Etymology and usage: The term derives from trashëgimi, the noun for inheritance, and the verb trashëgjoj; the suffix -et marks a present active/passive third-person form in certain constructions. In legal and formal writing, trashëgohet denotes that certain assets or duties are transmitted to heirs as part of the succession process.

Legal framework: In Albanian civil law, upon a person’s death the estate undergoes a process of inheritance. Assets and, where applicable, debts pass to heirs.
