The trapeziometacarpal joint, often abbreviated as the TMC joint, is a crucial articulation in the human hand. It is formed between the trapezium, one of the carpal bones in the wrist, and the base of the first metacarpal bone, which forms the thumb. This saddle-shaped joint allows for a wide range of motion, particularly the opposition of the thumb.

The unique structure of the TMC joint enables the thumb to move across the palm to touch the other fingers, a movement essential for grasping, pinching, and manipulating objects. This extensive mobility, however, also makes the TMC joint susceptible to wear and tear.

Osteoarthritis is a common condition affecting the TMC joint, often referred to as TMC arthritis or CMC arthritis. This degenerative joint disease can lead to pain, stiffness, and weakness in the thumb, significantly impacting hand function. Factors such as age, genetics, overuse, and previous injury can contribute to the development of TMC osteoarthritis.
