Transverse refers to something that lies or extends across. In geometry, a transverse line intersects a pair of other lines. When two parallel lines are intersected by a transversal, several pairs of angles are formed, including alternate interior angles, alternate exterior angles, and corresponding angles, which have specific relationships with each other.

In anatomy, transverse refers to a plane that divides the body horizontally, perpendicular to the long axis of the body. This plane is also known as the axial plane or horizontal plane. Structures or movements described as transverse are oriented or occurring in this plane. For example, a transverse fracture is a break in a bone that runs perpendicular to the bone's shaft.

In physics, transverse waves are waves in which the particles of the medium move in a direction perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer. Examples include light waves and waves on a string. This is in contrast to longitudinal waves, where particle motion is parallel to the direction of wave propagation, such as sound waves.
