Transcendent is an adjective used to describe something that goes beyond ordinary limits or experience. It derives from the Latin transcendere, “to climb over” or “to surpass.” In English and many other languages, it is used across philosophy, theology, mathematics, and culture to signal something that exceeds ordinary understanding or measurement.

In philosophy, the term denotes what lies beyond the possible limits of empirical observation or rational verification. It is often contrasted with immanent, which denotes merely present within the world. The word appears in debates about metaphysical topics, religious belief, and aesthetic experience, where interlocutors consider whether such transcendent realities can be known or apprehended. Philosophers also distinguish transcendence from transcendental, the latter a technical term in epistemology and Kantian philosophy referring to the conditions that make experience possible.

In theology, transcendence describes the way the divine stands outside and beyond the created order. A transcendent God is not reducible to natural categories, yet may interact with the world through concepts such as grace, revelation, or miracles. The tension between transcendence and immanence is central to many religious traditions.

In mathematics and the sciences, the related term is transcendental. Transcendental numbers, such as pi and e, cannot be roots of any nonzero polynomial with integer coefficients. Transcendence theory studies these properties and their implications. The term is broaderly used to describe objects or ideas that cannot be fully captured by conventional, finite systems.

In everyday language, transcendent can describe experiences, works of art, or states of awareness that seem to rise above ordinary life and evoke the sublime or the ineffable.
