Active transport also relies on transport proteins, often called pumps. These pumps bind to the substance and use energy to change their conformation, moving the substance across the membrane. Examples include the sodium-potassium pump, crucial for nerve impulse transmission, and proton pumps. Endocytosis and exocytosis are bulk transport mechanisms that involve the formation of vesicles to move large molecules or particles into or out of the cell, respectively.
